The Strange Woman

by Phillip Saxton

“Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? May it never be!” (1 Corinthians 6:15).

Who is the strange woman? The answer is easy. She is any woman to whom you are not married. But the strange woman in this Proverb goes further. She is a woman of loose morals who loves to temp men into the act of fornication. “Do not desire her beauty in your heart, Nor let her catch you with her eyelids.” (Proverbs 6:25).

In our society sex has been greatly minimized in importance. It is used to advertise products, promote ideas and thought of as being as casual as having a meal or watching sports. It is presented as being purely physical without commitment or emotional attachment. The world presents the idea of moving from one sexual partner to another as about as important as changing one’s clothes.

Solomon is teaching that sex is much more. It is based upon the concept of one flesh.

Proverbs 2 - Teaches us today?

Proverbs 2:16 “(16) To deliver you from the strange woman, From the adulteress who flatters with her words;”

Psalm 67:1-4 (Theme: The Praise of the God who Blesses). “(1) God be gracious to us and bless us, And cause His face to shine upon us- (2) That Thy way may be known on the earth, Thy salvation among all nations. (3) Let the peoples praise Thee, O God; Let all the peoples praise Thee. (4) Let the nations be glad and sing for joy; For Thou wilt judge the peoples with uprightness, And guide the nations on the earth.”

Today’s question. Will the Holy Spirit ever leave your temple?

Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16).

As a Christian, when you become one with another you are making the most intimate of commitments that it is possible for two humans to make.  If your partner is your spouse then this union is blessed by God and is in accord with His will. When as a Christian, you become one with another Christian who is not your spouse, then not only are you engaged in physical adultery, but you are also bringing into the union the Holy Spirit who is grieved by the act.

When a Christian becomes one with a non-Christian you are bringing your temple indwelt by the Holy Spirit into an unholy union. You are becoming one flesh with the world and we are advised against this.

“Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a harlot is one body with her? For He says, “The two will become on flesh.” But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body.” (1 Corinthians 6:16-18).

Dear God, lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil. Amen.
